PARENTING
We believe in the Positive Discipline approach to parenting because of its focus on building meaningful relationships, decision-making skills, emotional expression, and autonomy. Positive Discipline is NOT permissive parenting. In fact, PD highlights the need for clear rules, expectations, and consequences. Most of the specialists on our team are trained PD parent coaches, please ask us if you need parenting support.

TECHNOLOGY
Screen-time access (what and how much) is the single biggest challenge for our clients and families at this time. So, yes, we talk about it. A lot. Research shows that individuals (children and adults) with underlying attention and anxiety issues are at a higher risk of becoming screen addicted. Excessive use of screens will ultimately affect any academic, social, or executive functioning support our team offers.

ATTENTION AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING CHALLENGES
Executive Functioning skills are a set of mental processes that help us carry out tasks like planning, organizing, managing time, and thinking flexibly which ultimately helps us reach our future goals. Our academic coaches provide the organization, instruction, and encouragement necessary for students to complete assignments and to gain the momentum they need to be successful during the school day and at home.

DYSLEXIA
Dyslexia is a neurological-based brain difference that impacts the way someone processes language. Since there are numerous aspects to language in our brain and its use in society, dyslexia can affect reading, spelling, writing and oral language. The scientifically proven intervention for dyslexia is an Orton-Gillngham structured literacy approach taught by trained therapists. Our therapists are Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALTs) who are highly student-centered in their approach to meeting student learning styles and needs. The goal of ALT and 1:1 therapy is to teach to mastery. At BES we want to understand the big picture of our family and student needs, then determine how we can be part of the solution team going forward.

DYSGRAPHIA
Dysgraphia is a condition in which a person has difficulties writing well. For a variety of reasons, it is increasingly common among our clients. It’s important to note that while there are different variations of dysgraphia; affecting spelling, motor planning, and/or processing, they all fall under Dysgraphia, which is a writing disability. Our team does not follow a single program for addressing Dysgraphia; but rather, we individualize treatment according to the severity, age, and educational expectations for each client. Frequency of practice and quality of instruction is highly important when working with students who have Dysgraphia. Most clients have actually been writing for years, however, their writing is not an accurate reflection of their cognitive abilities. Errors will need to be unlearned (known as “fossilized errors”). There is not a quick fix for Dysgraphia.

SOCIAL SKILLS/SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
Social skills are important in every environment any time you are sharing space with another person. Our speech-language pathologists work on increasing social-emotional competencies and social problem solving to increase our clients’ conversational skills, executive functioning, friendship skills, and perspective taking. Increasing these skills functionally helps to support regulation, interaction in one-on-one and group settings, reading comprehension, and how to make sense of the social world and navigate within it.
